A new marketplace for used cars

A better place to sell your car.

Leave the old classifieds and the paid listing sites behind. Throttle is free to list and free to buy. Enter the VIN and the specs fill in for you. Buyers message you in the app, so your number stays yours.

Why switch

Three ways to sell a car, side by side.

A classified ad got you spam and your number in public. A paid site got you organized, and a bill for being seen. Throttle is organized and free.

Selling

Post it in minutes.

About a minute if you have the VIN. One page, and your draft saves as you go.

  1. Identify it

Scan the VIN barcode on the door jamb or type the 17 characters, and the engine, drivetrain and body fill in from the manufacturer’s record. No VIN handy? Pick the year, make and model and fill in the rest yourself, and your listing marks those details “Entered by the seller”.

  2. Add 3 to 15 photos

Shoot the actual car in daylight. Photos are resized on your phone and location data is removed before upload.

  3. Set the details and your price

Mileage, title status and a whole-dollar price. Buyers see your city and a distance, never your address.

  4. Post it and share the link

Tap Post vehicle, then share your listing’s link anywhere you already talk to people. Listings are set to run for 60 days and renew with a tap. Bump yours to the top for free once every 7 days.

The Vehicle step in the app: type the VIN, a scan button, Look up, or pick the year, make and model instead.
The Photos and Details steps in the app: add 3 to 15 photos, an optional private VIN plate photo, then mileage and title status.

How selling works

For dealers

Your whole lot, from one spreadsheet.

Turn on business mode in settings. No separate account, no fees and no plans to pick from.

One CSV for the whole lot

VIN, price and mileage are required. A blank title cell, or no title column at all, is listed as title unknown. Photos come from URLs in the file.

A page for your dealership

Hours, directions, your declared license and a tap-to-show number, with your whole live inventory underneath, newest first.

A dashboard that answers the usual questions

Views, messages, median days on lot, response time and what’s been sitting longest.

Re-import to update

Prices, mileage and descriptions update in place, matched by stock number, then VIN. Photos already on a listing are left alone.
Sample dealer page in the app: business name, Phone verified and Declared dealer badges, then Show number, Website and Directions.

Sample listings and people. Pre-release app.

Messages and safety

Talk to buyers without giving out your number.

Every conversation stays in the app, tied to the listing it’s about.

Sample conversation: “Text me at [number removed]”, a note that contact details stay in the app, and a Meeting up card with safety tips.
A “Before you send” card over a draft message that offers a cashier’s check and a refund of the difference: “Never refund the difference on an overpayment.”

Sample listings and people. Pre-release app.

Contact details come out automatically

Phone numbers, emails, links and social handles are removed from messages, so nobody has to hand out a number to a stranger.

Scams explained before they go out

If a message you’re about to send mentions escrow, a wire transfer, a cashier’s check, an overpayment or shipping, Throttle explains how that scam works before it goes.

A checklist when you meet up

When a conversation turns to meeting, it shows a short safety card: daylight, somewhere public, bring someone.

Report and block from anywhere

A person reads every report. Blocking stops someone from messaging you or starting a conversation with you, and their listings no longer show when you browse.

No payments in the app

Throttle isn’t a party to the sale and never asks you to use an escrow site. Meet in person and get paid in person.

Buying

See the facts before you message.

Browse without an account. Every price is the seller’s asking price in whole dollars.

Filter by what matters

  • Price
  • Year
  • Mileage
  • Distance
  • Make and model
  • Body
  • Drivetrain
  • Transmission
  • Fuel
  • Clean title only
  • Private or business seller

When a seller enters the VIN, year, make, model, engine and drivetrain are decoded from it using NHTSA’s public VIN decoder and locked on the listing. Sellers state the title status and mileage; Throttle doesn’t check titles.

Price, mileage, title status and trim are the seller’s entries. The rest is decoded from the VIN. Listings show “From the manufacturer’s record” only when the details match the VIN’s decode.

Questions

What sellers ask first.

How does Throttle make money?

It doesn’t yet. Listing, buying and messaging are free. There are no ads, and Throttle doesn’t sell your information.

Listing, buying and messaging will stay free. If paid extras are ever added, they’ll be optional, they won’t be paid placement and they’ll be announced on this site first.

Why Throttle exists

Will anyone see my car?

Throttle is new, and it’s launching first in Dallas–Fort Worth. Listing is free, so there’s nothing to lose by posting your car here too.

Every listing has its own link you can share anywhere: text it to a friend, post it in a group or put it in your bio. Nobody can pay to be placed above you, and you can bump your listing to the top for free once every 7 days.

How selling works

Will buyers see my phone number or address?

No. Buyers message you in the app, and phone numbers, emails, links and social handles are removed from listings and messages automatically.

Your listing shows your city and a distance, never your address, and the location is blurred on your phone before it’s saved. Photos are resized on your phone, and location data is removed before upload.

If you’re a dealer, you can show more: with business mode on, your business address, hours and phone number (behind a Show number tap) appear on your dealer page.

Buying and selling safely

When can I get the app, and where does it work?

Throttle is coming soon to iPhone and Android. For the whole US, launching first in Dallas–Fort Worth.

Join the launch list and you’ll get one email when it’s live, nothing else.

Get notified

I sell cars for a living. Can I use Throttle?

Yes. Business mode is a free setting on your account, not a separate account, and you can turn it off any time.

It gives you a public dealer page for your lot, CSV import for your whole inventory and a dashboard with views, messages and days on lot.

Business sellers have to say so. Posing as a private seller isn’t allowed, and buyers can report it.
